RFID Radio Frequency Identification

For decades the Oil Industry have deployed various technologies to control downhole tools. The hostile environments experienced within wells, have however seen many of these technologies fail or fail to work reliably.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) involves the use of a tag in order to identify and track via  radio waves. RFID identification comprises the use of both interrogators (also known as readers), and tags. Most RFID tags contain at least two parts. One is an integrated circuit (transponder) which predominantely stores and processes information and modulates or demodulates a radio-frequency signal. The second is an antenna or reader for receiving and transmitting the signal. When the tag approaches the reader, the radio frequency (RF) field generated by the reader powers up the tag causing it to continuously transmit its data by 'pulsing' the radio frequency.  The data is then captured by the reader and processed.
